I agree. I will only consider a drive that comes with the cable included. Yuiichi makes a very valid comment if it is just going to be a Backup drive, however I do not know all of the options available to use the drive for. Since I may wind up with more than one drive I think I will get the one with the faster through put first. I may not ever work with RAW image files, but it could happen.

I visited your site, you have some awesome shots.

I personally just use the USB 2.0 interface for my backup. I don't use any FireWire devices and BBB makes a good point about the longevity of it.

The drive I use is the 500GB version of this drive and my girlfriend uses a 160GB version of the WD Passport with her PC. They both work well.

I'm glad you are getting on well with your Mac.

Good Link thank you. I was looking at the 500GB Studio version of this drive that has the FireWire 800. YuiichI and you agree that FireWire may go away. I have never used FireWire for anything my self. The WD My Book Studio has USB 2.0 FireWire 400/800 and eSATA hooks ups. It is about 40 US more expensive, but it comes with the cables.

I still have not picked one, but all of you recommend the WD drives, so I will stay with that. I have had good luck with WD on my PC's as well. After my Second hard disk crash that was no longer under warranty I went with WD Internal. I bought two of them, installed them and use one for clone and backups only.

Thanks Notabadname,

I must say this community is a good one. I have gotten a bit stumped looking through some of the old post recommending software. Not having a Mac background I do not know what was lacking in Tiger and older OS's. However I am loving my Mac and there has been much joy in the journey.

I will post my progress and jump in where I can.

You may also want to look at buying a separate drive and enclosure and building your own.

Amazon have a ton of options here.

I am new to Apple, forums and blogs. I have many things to learn, but I am ready for the adventure to start. No better place to start than to post my first entry on TAB. My Apple knowledge is zero, so I welcome any and all suggestions as I explore and learn how to use my iMAC.

I just set up my iMAC 24 2.8 Ghz 2GB system last night. I usually do not buy service plans, however after reading some of items on TAB I ordered Apple Care. Some members here recommend it and this is an All in One system that I do not have a clue about. That along with the fact that it seemed to be priced very well and not like most service plans I had been offered in the past.

Some of the Next steps I plan to take are listed below. I welcome all advice.
  • Puchase Apple Care. Done
  • Purchase external storage and set up Time Machine.
  • Discover if it is possibel to partition the new storage unit.
  • Research to see if I can Clone the system on the Storage.
  • Explore and consider useing NeoOffice.

I plan to purchase G-Technology 500GB G-Drive Q Quad Interface External Hard Drive and use the Firewire 800 connection. However I will wait till later today to see if any TAB members suggest a different path or product.

Again, thank you for this community and the knowledge you all share. I will continue to research and learn on TAB. Do not have much to share on experience at this point.

The iMAC was easy to set up. It looks better on my desk at home than on the store display.

Have a wonderful day!

Regards,

Opus
