My powerbook G4 starts up without the chime, and after the initial grey apple logo gives me a black screen with the following prompts

/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directorry
I0BluetoothHCIController::start Idle Timer Stopped
-sh-2.055b#

followed by a flashing cursor

I tried inserting the system restore disc and starting holding down the 'C' key but this did not work and the disc now will not eject.

Any suggestions apart from investing in a new Mac?

Try holding down option instead and seeing if that works. Otherwise, bring it by the Apple Store.
