Update: I have the PowerBook in hand, after getting an amazing deal from a good friend. I am currently looking into the purchase of an solid state drive, but I discovered the market for such is very limited. This is because the PowerBook runs off the old PATA 2.5" hard drive connection, rather than the newer and more standard SATA used in MacBooks today. Another downside is that the PATA connection restricts the data speed in most real world application to about 70MB/sec read and write. This is definitely faster than most 7200rpm PATA drives, but slow compared to the 250MB/sec speeds accomplished in SATA solid state drives.

Anyway, the purchase of an SSD for this system goes along with the general idea of the project, so I still think it's a good idea. The drive should be a bit lighter, and that's always a plus.

I'm trying to calculate the weight that would be shaved down in the entire process, and I'm thinking I may be able to get it below 4lb (1.8kg), thus creating one of the most portable and light Macs ever.
