Hi all,

Just wondered what your recommendations are for a busy graphic designer (mainly CS4 and Quark). Have always had a Pro (or equivalent) but the new top iMac specs look to match the more expensive Quad Pro? Have Cinema display so don't need the screen, but if it's a better machine cos its new, am I better off switching to 27 inch iMac?

Thanks!

Any idea for how to get some money for the stock RAM in a machine if you do a 3rd party RAM upgrade? I'll have 2 GB of Apple RAM that will sit in a drawer. It would be nice to get $30 for the two chips or something like that. It would offset the cost of the upgrade.

MDD "Firewire 800" Freeze-up issues?

I'm have a couple of questions regarding problems with a MDD, "Firewire 800" that I've rebuilt.

The "current" configuration specs for the MDD I've built are these:
1) Dual 1.25GHz
2) Motherboard is Apple part number 630-4633 (Note- This is the original "Firewire 800" motherboard that it came with. According to the serial number and ID sticker, it was originally a single, 1 GHz. I swapped out the processor, and bumped it up to the dual 1.25GHz.)
3) Pioneer DV-105PD DVD Superdrive
4) Video card is GeForce 4 MX (64MB)
5) 1.5 GB DDR333
6) OS 10.5 installed

The system is experiencing "Freeze-ups" similar to those you might see with a processor overheating issue. However, while the heatsink gets fairly warm, which I understand is normal, it doesn't seem to be overly "hot". You can touch, and remain touching, the base plate area of the heatsink and not get burned. It just gets pretty warm is all.

My searches at "Apple" shows that in the Original configuration (Single 1GHz processor) the system ran at 133MHz bus speeds, but that the Dual 1.25GHz ran at 167MHz bus speeds.

Question 1: Is the bus speed of the MDD determined by the processor, or the motherboard? I always thought it was the processor. Is my model "Firewire 800" motherboard (Apple # 630-4633) compatible with either 133MHz Bus or a 167MHz Bus speed?

Question 2: There were several processor heatsinks for these models. The one I'm using is the Stainless Steel one, and not the Aluminium or Copper. I can't seem to find if this one is compatible with the Dual 1.25GHz processors. Do I need to change the heatsink to different one, and if so which one should I use?

Just as an added note, this system has sometimes run normally for hours without freezing, but it has also froze up within minutes of starting it up. The only thing specific that will force it to freeze is attempting to burn a DVD (heavy CPU usage). However, it has also frozen-up while just surfing the web (light load conditions). Any help or ideas with resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated. I thought I knew most all the Apple G4's pretty well, but this one has me stumped.

Thanks in advance!

Just got the new mouse and after updating the software have fallen in love. Without the update Snow Leopard refuses to find it. Stepping up from the mighty mouse is a good call. No more clogged scroll wheel. This thing scrolls so beautifully. Just a swipe of the finger, slow or fast. Nicely heavy too. Bit slow on tracking though. Just thought I'd let you know it's a great piece of hardware. Looks fantastic as well.

Okay... I hate to complain... But how long are Apple products supposed to last?

The iPhone earphones are useless and literally blew the other day... As in a huge spark came out if it and the cord was severed...

The 30-Pin dock connector is... Um... Seperated... Between the wire coverIng and he actual 30 pin connector thing... Was just all tangled wire! No covering, just 30 strands of wire all tangled up!

What else? Ah yes... I was wondering why my computer was running slow the other day... I just took a glance at the System Profiler... And what do ya know? One of my ram chips wasn't working properly!

I opened the back case (why are there so many screws!) and found the RAM chip... It had been somewhat disconnected... I reput it in and I turned my computer back on... To find out why my computer was running so hot... That would be that my fan doesn't work! So I dislodged that and got it spinning again... I was just thinking... What's next?

Hey all,

My mum and I were thinking of replacing our Sony TV that has served us well for the past 10 years, with an iMac.

A few questions we have:

1. Is it possible to get absolute Live TV off it? Like some PC's have antenna cables that you plug your antenna into, go into Media Center, set it up, and off you go.

2. Can you get HD? We just bought a HD tuner and it is useless. It is honestly driving us up the wall! Do we need Apple TV to get HD?

3. Is it possible to plug external items in? Such as: a Wii, PS2 and a DVD player

Um otherwise, any other suggestions, hints, tips, etc you have, please post them... I know the Genius people could probably help us through this, but we want and idea before we go there!

A quad-core Intel Core i5 or i7 “Nehalem” processor for $1,999 or $2,199 respectively with a 27 inch, LED 2560 x 1440 resolution screen. Wow! There is truly nothing else (certainly in an all-in-one) that touches this bargain. Apple keeps topping themselves. Only one more option needed Apple, pleeeaaaasssee give us a Blu-ray RW to take advantage of that power and stunning display.

OK, one more thing. A FULL SIZE wireless keyboard! Why build such a beautiful, top-end "work station", and not offer a wireless keyboard with a freaking number pad. This is a work machine, not something I am trying to squeeze into my carry-on luggage. Most people used to have a 27 inch screen as their principal TV a decade ago. This isn't designed to be portable, I just don't get the micro-keyboard. Thank goodness for Logitech's beautiful "made for Mac" wireless seen here. So with the keyboard issue solved . . . . .

. . . back to Blu-ray. Even Acer (we are talking about low-end manufacturer here folks) offers blu-ray now as an option-total price $679.99 (to be fair, that is read only, but I would accept that Apple).

Anyway, awesome product Apple. So this must mean we are getting a new Apple Cinema Display, since the 24 inch iMac is gone, and they now have this 27 inch LED screen in production. That's good news too. I am sure we will see that pretty soon.
