You can use in completely in place of BOMArchiveHelper, the OS X app, or you can use The Unarchiver just for the types of archives BOMArchiveHelper is not capable of opening.
Wow that Unarchiver you suggested is great! I no longer have the gibberish that Safari was producing and I can extract stuff alot more quickly with fewer crashes!

Thanks BBB.

PS: When Safari (4 Beta) downloads, it automatically extracts the .zip file. So I never need to. However, when Safari might say that the file is "Missing or corrupt", Unarchiver extracts it no-problem at all!

I am using Unarchiver for everything but whatever BOMArchiveHelper can do automatically.

I would turn off that setting if I were you. I don't think it shouldn't be on by default and several months/year ago there was an exploit which took advantage of this. Just more secure to have it turned off.

Under Safari Preferences on the General tab deselect the "Open Safe files after downloading" check box.

Safari 99% of the time. Firefox when something doesn't seem to be working in Safari.

FYI: you can force Safari to download instead of trying to display a file by holding the Option key as you click on a link (or as you press return in the address bar), or you can drag the link right into the Downloads window.
