I am a novice Apple user. Can someone answer this question: on the left hand panel of my gmail, where my email addresses are listed, sometimes one will disappear. Does anyone know what would cause that?

I think you are getting confused here. Do you mean the Mail app on your mac, or gmail.com? Could you explain this in more detail and possibly include screenshots to illustrate the issue?

The email application on the Mac. I am actually trying to help a friend, that's why I'm a novice. I'll be over there tomorrow and take a look at it. I know she launches Safari to bring up her applications and there is a "gmail" link at the top of the page she uses to get to her email....

That's not what you just referred to above. That's called opening Safari and loading the Gmail web interface, in the same way you would visit a news website etc, it's not the Mac's built in email application.

I'm sorry if I sound terse but in order to help we need know exactly what you are trying to do. At the moment you seem to be confusing the built in email client Mail.app with visiting the Gmail website.

I know, I am ... that's because I am a Windows user and have just sat down in front of her screen once to give her some simple instructions. I will look at it again thiws evening and familiarize myself more with what she is trying to do.
