I'm heading out to the AT&T store later today to pre-order an iPhone 3GS (16GB)! I've owned an iPod Touch (1G) for the past two years, so I've experienced the App Store and am very comfortable with typing on the on-screen keyboard and with the touch interface in general. The iPhone should be a fairly smooth transition as compared to someone who's never owned an iPod Touch/iPhone before and needs to learn how to type, etc.

However, the iPhone will obviously be different in many respects. The main differences for me (and the reasons I'm buying) are built-in microphone, built in speaker, internet access virtually anywhere, camera, and GPS. When I move to the iPhone, I will be bringing many of the applications from my Touch. However, there're lots of apps that are essentially iPhone only. These might include apps that use the microphone (such as Shazam), apps that require a GPS (such as RunKeeper), and other applications that are of limited use on the iPod Touch because of the features it lacks in comparison to the iPhone. I know there are a lot of these apps out there that I've ignored because I can't use them. Can everyone recommend me a couple of good apps that are especially/only useful on the iPhone?

Also, I need to buy a case. I think I'd like to get some type of rubberized shell that has decent grip to it, but something sturdier than silicon. I am leaning towards the ifrogz 3G Luxe, but if anyone has some great cases to recommend, I'd definitely appreciate it.

Thanks everyone. Looking forward to June 19th!

Great to here about it! iPhones and iPod Touches use the same Operating System, so transitioning should be easy.

Because of the same OS, the Applications should run well, you just have to make sure that its for OS 3.0 in order to work properly.

As for cases, something like what you suggested looks good.

Good luck and enjoy your new iPhone!

Thanks. I realize that the run (almost) the same OS, that's why it should be a smooth switch. I'm obviously looking forward to the new features of 3.0, but what I'm really looking for advice on are apps that are iPhone-only, such as the ones I mentioned above. Not all apps run on the Touch.

This is the case I have used now for two years BBB, the Seidio, Innocase II Surface. I love it! It is very conformal and keeps the slim form of the phone slim. It is hard and slips into a pocket well (unlike silicone skins) and it has an optional belt holster or horizontal leather case which works great. I have literally traveled a million miles this year with my 3G, dropped it a couple of times from 3 to 4 feet, and bumped or rubbed my hip and it in its holster against walls and such, countless times. I also like the cut-out that shows the Apple logo on the back.

Some people carry these rubberized cases that make the sleek iPhone look like a tank. Sort of defeats one of my reasons for buying the iPhone IMO.

The Innocase II Surface looks very similar to the ifrogz and the Griffin elan. I think I'll have to choose between the three. Or just buy all three.

I ended up going with the Griffin Elan, partly because they had it in the at&t store where I went to pre-order my iPhone. The sales rep said it most likely will be ready for my on Friday, but could take a little longer if Apple doesn't have enough to fill all the pre-orders.

The at&t rep confirmed for me that a memo had been sent out instructing store reps to warn customers of potential delays if they are just preordering now. Apple will fill the pre-orders with at&t, but it may not be as fast as it should be.

If your looking for iPhone only apps, anything that requires a microphone, camera or GPS.

Stuff like Shazam, Camera zoom, or Navman.

Good luck and enjoy your iPhone!!
