Thought i'd strike up a chat about the new iPhone 3.0 software update...
What is everyone looking forward to/want the most? I know nothing has been confirmed but im personally looking forward to the prospect of running programs as background tasks such as instant messaging AND a new interface so that apps can be managed a little easier (As a lot of other people, i have an annoying amount of apps. I force myself to remove apps just because it's becoming unmanageable, not because they are no good or wont be useful some day) |

I want a more powerful iPhone (as in processing power) to come with the release of iPOS3 in a few months, assuming it plays out like 2.0 did last year with March announce and June drop for developers and a phone to match.
I want HTML 5, background processes and app management. Otherwise, all improvements are welcome and nothing is in dire need of fixing, so I will be pleased with whatever they bring out on Tuesday and can't wait for the next gen iPhone to drop in June.

I think they need voice turn-by-turn directions with the GPS, like that big name Berry competitor has. I hear this as a complaint/shortcoming from my BlackBerry friends. Voice dialing would be very nice for a smart phone too. The thing can already recognize songs played into it, voice dialing shouldn't be a stretch.
I strongly agree with the App management. It would be so nice to be able to configure your various pages via iTunes. You could have all 9 available pages of your iPhone displayed on your computer screen in a 9 pane window, allowing you to easily drag your apps around. It is very frustrating moving lots of Apps around with the iPhone's interface now. I also want the ability to remove the Apple Apps from my display, just like any other App. I don't prefer the Apple Stock checker for example, I like Bloomberg's. I should be able to hide the Apple version. I would even think it a good idea to be able to build category buttons, one for Games, one for News, one for Utilities, etc., which takes you to your page of those corresponding Apps. Paging through the ever increasing pages of Apps can be slow and tedious.

Copy & Paste!
If that happens, I can start the process of retiring my Palm TX from it's position as my frontline PDA... --ryan

Copy and Paste would be nice. I'm not missing not having it, but I have a feeling I'd start using my iPod for more things if you could copy and paste things. I don't even know what I'd like to see in the iPhone 3.0 hardware, other than the usual suspects (better battery life, better reception, etc.). I'd love to see one come to Verizon too so I could actually buy it, but that's not happening. I'm sure Apple will give everyone something we don't even know we want and then convince us we need it, as usual. And of course, we will be convinced we cannot continue living without it within approximately 1.2 seconds of seeing it.

I'm pretty strong when it comes to the iPhone. Don't want one, don't need one, will not get one! (repeat that as necessary!)As for features I'd like to see (even though I'm not using a device which uses this OS) is definitely a better Springboard app. The current one was nice when it was only one page. Now I see people with iPhones and iPod Touches with a million screens and they all flip back and forth between them (this is an exaggeration). Can they come up with something better for the many Apps people have? I hope so!

Like Notbadname said, it's all about the categories. An improved interface where main apps used are on the home screen with the option to go to a categories screen to see all the other apps. No doubt apple will be cheeky and not allow us to name the categories ourselves.
Better battery life as well but thats more for the unit itself. When the next gen iPhone is released, i would be very surprised if better battery life is not included in the features. That has been one of the major downfalls of the the 3G (but as like most, ive managed to move past it. lol) |

That's not to say this approach wouldn't work for some people - you and notabadname seem to think it would be a good solution. And that may very well be what Apple decides to go with. I, however, hope that they come up with something we've never seen or even though of before - something to revolutionize the "desktop metaphor", or perhaps do away with it. Who knows until it's released?

I would like to see more polish with the Apple base apps. I think it is a major oversight that you cannot send driving directions via email from the Maps App. You know, from point A to B, without dropping a stupid pin. Copy & Paste in general is it's weakness. We need it. Please Kevin Rose, be right! Landscape oriented keyboard for all Apps! Damn my fat fingers! Hardware: The new iPhone better have a better camera with video. The one in the current generation is weak. My BB Bold camera (work device) kicks it's butt. It would be nice to take a photo with my iPhone that I would want to keep. What were they thinking?

Yes, for software, video is truly a must. Just about every mid-range and up cell phone has video, not to mention nearly every smart phone. I am constantly in fear that I will be in the presence of some washed-up sitcom star in the middle of some racist rant, and I wont be able to sell the video of his break-down to CNN, or have the hottest viral video on You Tube. Come on Apple, I'm waiting for my big break.
