As far as my experience goes, both run about the same temperature, with the MBP actually being a little cooler. No, I don't own a MBP - this is all from temperature research I did near the beginning of owning my MacBook to see if it was running too hot. In either case, both still get warm but they're manageable to be used as a laptop.
Perhaps Matt can speak more to the reliability as well as his own experiences, as he has had both!
